Child Abuse Prevention

Our goal is that children and families have access to resources and services that help prevent child abuse long before they ever reach a crisis.

An effective Child Protective Services system is essential, and in Texas, a shift needs to be made to ensure we prevent children from experiencing abuse or neglect in the first place. During a family crisis, we also advocate that family preservation is made a priority, when it is safe to do so and is in the best interest of the child.

Texas, which is home to 10% of the nation’s children, consistently fails to support families in ways that can prevent early childhood trauma and set up families for success. These decisions drive substandard outcomes for Texas families as demonstrated by:

  • Poor and inequitable birth outcomes
  • High rates of maternal mortality and morbidity
  • Lack of food security
  • Fewer parents able to work, resulting in children living in poverty
  • Children who are not developmentally on track or ready to learn
