Frequently Asked Questions

About Child Abuse and Neglect in Texas

Is leaving a child alone in the house always a sign of neglect? Or, at what age can a child be left alone at home?

There’s no Texas law that dictates when a child can be left alone. However, supervision is critical to keep children safe at all times.

Can I make an anonymous report of child abuse in Texas?

Yes. Call the Texas Child Protective Services hotline at 1-800-252-5400 or report online. Both are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What kind of discipline is OK?

Parenting is hard work, and, at times, parents get frustrated. However, physical punishment is not positive discipline. Discipline also needs to be age appropriate. Visit GetParentingTips.com or sign up for Bright by Text tips. Those resources offer information on you and your child can have a safe, stable and nurturing relationship.

What do I do if I witness child abuse or neglect?

In Texas, every adult is a mandated reporter and is required to report suspected child maltreatment. This mandatory reporting is not just limited to teachers or health care professionals. Do you suspect someone of child abuse or neglect? Call the Texas Child Protective Services hotline at 1-800-252-5400 or report online. Both are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If I make a report to CPS, will the child be removed immediately?

CPS will make an assessment and determine if the child is at risk. If necessary, CPS will remove the child, but it may also offer family-based services.
